Located in the heart of downtown Providence, Rhode Island, the 294-room Graduate Providence is a landmark hotel with an illustrious past. Overview

The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the rooms and property are maintained in the best possible condition, with the least inconvenience to guests.  The Engineer is expected to perform routine maintenance and repair duties for guest rooms and the rest of the property, including but not limited to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, boilers and carpentry.     

Responsibilities

  • Essential Responsibilities:

    • Approach all encounters with guests and employees in an attentive, friendly, courteous and service-oriented manner.
    • Maintain regular attendance in compliance with Highgate standards, as required by scheduling which will vary according to the needs of the hotel(s).
    • Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming, which include wearing the proper uniform and nametag while working.
    • Comply at all times with Biltmore standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient hotel operations.
    • Maintain a warm and friendly demeanor at all times.  Be attentive, friendly, helpful, and courteous to all guests, managers and fellow employees.
    • Respond to all guest requests, problems, complaints, and/or accidents presented through the front desk, radio/phone calls, work orders, in an attentive, courteous and efficient manner.  Follow up to ensure guest satisfaction. 
    • Make basic repairs to air conditioners – change filters, clean coils, replace blower motors, etc.
    • Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC systems
    • Take chiller readings and water samples
    • Repair/replace tile, grouting, and caulking
    • Repair drapes and rods, replace hooks, cords and slides
    • Install towel racks, toilet paper holders, shower curtain rods and door stops
    • Replace TV’s and cable boxes.  Program movie channel boxes 
    • Replace light switches, receptacles and light bulbs
    • Perform basic furniture repairs
    • Hang pictures and banners
    • Basic painting and touch up as needed
    • Make basic wall covering repairs
    • Participates in preventative maintenance program in guest rooms.
    • Perform minor plumbing repairs – Change FET washers, stems seats, cartridges, handles, drain fittings, etc.
    • Replace lavatories and toilets
    • Log all calls and requests and confirm completion
    • Must attend all training as required
    • Engineer on call (10-1) must respond to guest calls within 15 minutes via radios.  Must also follow up with front desk when job is completed or the outcome.
    • Inspect and maintain all fire extinguishers and re-pressurize as needed
    • Other duties as required

     

    Marginal Responsibilities:

    • Clean Engineering shop
    • Clean tools and equipment (if necessary) after use and return to proper storage areas.
    • Inventory on supplies as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience:
    • High School Diploma and/or experience in a hotel or a related field.
    • Trade school or college course work in a related field preferred.
    • Must have experience with steam boilers.
    • Must possess basic computer literacy.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Long hours sometimes required, weekends and holidays required.
    • Very heavy work – Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. 
    • Must be able to climb ladders

    • Must work well in stressful, high pressure situations
    • Must maintain composure and objectivity under pressure

    • Must be effective at listening to, understanding, and clarifying the concerns and issues raised by co-workers and guests
    • Must have a thorough understanding of fire alarm procedures and other emergencies
    • Must know locations of all electrical panels, meters, gas mains, and water shutoff valves
